Why the plainplan Pack Includes a Print Guide

The gap I could not design away

I spent a long time on the grid: cell heights, the weight of the weekday labels, how much a Sunday should stand out. All of that ends up in a PDF that is, by any measure, finished. Then somebody downloads it, and the product is not finished at all - it is a file on a laptop, and a wall it has not reached yet.

A printed calendar is unusual that way. Most digital products are used where they are bought. This one has a physical step in the middle that I do not control: somebody has to choose a size, choose a paper, and explain both to a person behind a counter who has never heard of the thing. If that step goes wrong, the calendar is bad, no matter what I did to the grid.

What people actually asked

The early emails were not about the design. They were: what size should I print this, what do I tell the print shop, why do I have a JPG as well, does it start on Sunday. The same five or six questions, from people in different countries, every one of them stuck at the exact point where the product stopped being mine.

I answered each one by hand for a while. The answers were always the same three lines. When you find yourself typing the same three lines for the tenth time, you have found a missing part of the product.

One page, or nobody reads it

The first draft was four pages and it was wrong. Nobody opens a zip file and settles in to read a manual. The version that shipped is one page per language: package, print at home, print it big, on your screen, five questions. Everything a copy shop needs is in one block, so you can show them the page instead of explaining it.

The price range was the line I hesitated over longest. Prices vary, and putting a number on paper feels like a promise. It went in anyway, because the most common way people get overcharged is not knowing what normal looks like. Roughly £6-12 for an A2 print is normal. If somebody quotes £40, walk out.

Five languages, five separate pages

The packs are sold by language, but the guide is the same file in all of them, with English, Spanish, French, German and Czech each on their own page. Two reasons. First, households are mixed - a German pack often ends up on a wall where someone reads it in English. Second, I did not want anyone to have to download a second pack just to get instructions they could read.

The Czech page is the one I wrote first, because it is the one I could check with the copy shop down the street.

Why it is inside every pack

It would have been easier to put the guide on the website and link to it. I did not, because the moment someone needs it they are offline, at a counter, with the zip on their phone. The instructions have to be where the files are.

It also means the guide is versioned with the product. The footer of every page carries a version and a date. When something in it changes, every pack on every channel is rebuilt from the same source, so an Etsy buyer and a Gumroad buyer never end up with different advice. That was a small rule to set and it has saved me from a class of support email entirely.
